Off-topic, but:
The Michelson-Morley experiment, which initially disproved the Luminiferous
Aether model, is from 1887. Special Relativity, from 1905, is what came up
with an explanation for the experiment. However, yes, it remained somewhat
obscure.
General Relativity (1915) got its first experimental confirmation with the Solar
Eclipse observations in 1919 by Eddington and others.
Though that does indeed lead to:
