Lot is a shorter word for allotment. To allot
<https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/allot>is to...

   1. (transitive
   <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Glossary#transitive>) To
   distribute <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/distribute> or apportion
<https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/apportion> by (or as if by) lot
   <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lot>.
   2. (transitive
   <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Glossary#transitive>) To assign
   <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/assign> or designate
   <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/designate> as a task
   <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/task> or for a purpose
   <https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/purpose>.

IIRC, someone once pointed out that colony is -- or almost is -- an
allocator. Any ground near there we haven't covered?
