Hi everyone.
I have some feedback about the hybrid meeting at CppCon, which I attended
remotely.
First of all, heroic conduct on the part of the tech folk. You demonstrated
great engineering "in the raw". It was clear that there was a lot of
sorting out to do, decisions to be made about microphones and connection,
and so on.
That being said, it was very hard, and tiring, to follow what was going on.
When Timur was presenting it was quite simple to keep up. However, when
voices piped up without any kind of identification, I spent time trying to
work out who was speaking and I found it required a lot of concentration to
follow what was being said.
In pure virtual meetings (pun intended) everyone is connected to their own
microphone and Zoom will indicate who is speaking. Even if the speaker has
no camera, somehow that makes it easier to keep up. Being able to identify
a speaker adds important context to their comments, even if that context is
"they have no observable existing position on this proposal."
Additionally, when more than one person was speaking, or there was
background chat, or other people inadvertently opened their microphones,
things rapidly became unintelligible. I might have been able to ask people
to stop talking, but I am bolder than most. That has to remain the chair's
job. Discipline in the room is going to have to be very strong.
I suspect there is a better piece of software waiting to be written to
handle meetings in this format, to deal with the smart realtime mixing of a
collection of microphones, but for the time being this experiment increased
my resolve to attend Kona in person. The idea of attending forty hours of
hybrid meetings in one week from 11 time zones away currently rules it out
for me for anything but the smallest of groups. Certainly not LEWG, which
is my usual home.
Cheers,
G

Cheers,
G
