This thread has been going on for so long I was motivated to write: https://github.com/HowardHinnant/ascii_ctype just to explore the issue.

What I wrote doesn’t address the unicode issues, just the ascii issue, which was I think the original poster’s emphasis.

Wasn’t that hard. Might be useful. There it is. Everyone is welcome to use it. Not intrested in standardizing it.
