There's been some general pushback on "macros and preprocessor things make various types of tools impossible to deploy."  My question is aimed mostly at that: do we have evidence of that? Or is it just intuition?

How many people have experience providing tools to customers or code they don't control?  I'd like to get a sense of where this is concrete and where this is assumption?

You might have to ask a more specific question :-) For me open source wise: author of Boost.Build and Boost.Predef, contributor of Conan Boost Modular packages. "Closed" source.. contributor to Unreal Engine 4 and contracting support for it for clients. Is that what you are asking for?
